Nanuk was set up in 1989 by Chris Simoens after a career of 25 years in the gastronomy. Originally, Nanuk was set up as a discount store of deep frozen products, but it rapidly became clear that the production of deep frozen products represented a fast growing market. Consequently, the retail outlet was rebuilt into a production unit.In 1993, the building as a whole was transformed into a production area and the production of bite-size appetizers was launched on a large scale. Thanks to the culinary experience and know-how of Chris, Nanuk showed strong growth on the market of deep frozen products and continued to specialize itself in the production of bite-size appetizers, thus making Nanuk a famous name in that particular sector.
Thanks to this growth, it was decided to increase the production of custom made products. Today, Nanuk still maintains its strong position on the market of these products, exclusively developed with a private label.
When the company was trying to deal with the aftershocks of the dioxin crisis in 1999, Chris Simoens suddenly passed away. This was a huge loss for the company, but at the same time a brand new start for the children, who took over the management of the company.
The company kept on growing, which led to the takeover of a company in Moeskroen, specialized in the production of deep frozen desserts. This takeover immediately set a new vision for the future. The biggest goal was to bring Nanuk under one roof. The first step was taken in 2005 when investments were made into the organization, leading to the first IFS certificate version 4 in 2006.
The following years continuous efforts for investments were made to bring Nanuk under one roof. After having encountered many obstacles, Nanuk, celebrating its 20 years of existence, started with the most challenging and biggest investment of its history in 2010. The new building project which needs to unify both production areas, started and moreover, helped Nanuk in increasing its technical lead and its position for the future.
Today, Nanuk continuously improves its processes and technology and its investments in people in order stay competitive or to increase its lead over other companies.
