IFS standard

IFS stands for International Food Standard and was developed by the food industry impose requirements on producers of raw materials and finished products.

German retail organisations were not satisfiedwith the way in which BRC audits were carried out and tried to come up with improvements.  Cooperation with BRC auditors did not work, so they decided to create their own standard similar toIFS.  Especially additional requirements are imposed on audit reporting. There is less room for interpretation for the auditor and a points system is maintained in order to be able to compare results.  Auditors must be well trained before they are allowed to carry out audits.

With respect to the content IFS corresponds to 85% of BRC Global Standard for Food.  IFS does not comply with the regulations regardingcontract assessment and purchasing, but does correspond to ISO standard 9001:2000.  IFS signifies more than just a declaration of intent and sets down specific requirements for producers and suppliers.  Samples must be available of all relevant raw materials and all product batches until they reach their perishable date.

The most important question when drawing up this standard was the following: Is a company capable of introducing a product on the market in compliance with the legislation and specifications in that matter?

IFS is based onfive key elements, known as KO criteria:
• There should be a manageable number of critical control points  relevant for the sector concerned.
• These critical control points must be demonstrably managed via a fixed monitoring system.
• The management must ensure that employees are aware of their responsibility andmust put mechanisms in place monitoring the effectiveness of the system.
• It must be possible to track every product on theproduction line during each step of the production process (starting from raw materialsto the delivery address).
• Corrective actions must be taken in time to avoid repetition of any anomalies or non-conformities.

By using these requirements, we wish to point out that apart from delicious products, we are also marketing the highest quality and safe food products.  The certificates  issued after quality audits  carried out every year by recognized institutes prove that we meet the requirements.
