Origin of the name
In the language of the Inuit (the Eskimos living in Canada), “Nanuk” means bear and because only one species of bear lives in the North Pole, this refers to the white, northern or polar bear.
The Latin name for the animal is “Ursus Maritimus” which means “sea bear”. This name is justified as the white bear is not only a good swimmer but also mainly lives on pack ice or at the coast.
There’s no doubt that the King of the North Pole animals would feel at home in a company where the highest quality products are made at extremely low temperatures. Therefore, Nanuk is a name that best suits our business and that is reflected into the logo.

Why was the company called Nanuk? The founder of the company, Chris Simoens, was a good friend of the famous North Pole missionary, Father Franz Vandevelde O.M.I. (28 November, 1909 – 22 February, 2002). They did not only write letters to each other, but they visited each other regularly, with Father Franz paying him visits during his holidays in Flanders and Chris went to visit him on several occasions in the North Pole. He got to know and appreciate the North and the Inuit people. When the company was being set up, a suitable name was needed. Father Franz and Chris Simoens were both aware that the polar or white bear was known as the King of the North Pole animals, so the choice was an obvious one.
